WhatsApp template category checker
Updated: 21 October 2026
Short answer
Meta puts every WhatsApp template into a category: marketing (anything promotional), utility (an update about a specific order, booking or request) or authentication (one-time codes). The category sets the price. Paste your template below to see its likely category, its cost per send and anything that could get it rejected.
113 / 1,024 characters. Use {{1}}, {{2}} for variables.
Likely category
Utilityconfidence: high
It is about a specific transaction or request and has no promotional content. Keep it that way; the customer must have done something that this message is about.
Cost per send on Nexora: ₹0.16 (free if the customer wrote in the last 24 hours)
Approval checks
No common rejection reasons found.

How Meta decides the category
| Category | Use it for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Utility | A specific order, booking, payment, account or support request the customer started | “Your order #4521 has shipped.” |
| Marketing | Offers, launches, recommendations, re-engagement, invitations | “Flat 30% off this weekend.” |
| Authentication | One-time passwords for login or verification | “482913 is your verification code.” |
- Mixed content counts as marketing. An order update with “and get 10% off your next order” is a marketing template.
- Utility needs a trigger. The customer must have done something (ordered, booked, paid, asked) that the message is about.
- Send offers separately. Keep the update as utility, and send the offer as its own marketing message only to people who opted in.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between a marketing and a utility template?
- A utility template is about something specific the customer did or asked for, such as an order, booking, payment or support request, and contains nothing promotional. Anything promotional, such as offers, launches, recommendations or re-engagement, is marketing.
- Why did Meta change my utility template to marketing?
- Usually because it contains promotional content, such as a discount, a call to buy or a product recommendation, or because it isn't tied to a specific transaction. Meta classifies a template with any promotional content as marketing, even if most of it is an update.
- Why does the category matter?
- Price. On Nexora a marketing message costs ₹0.97 and a utility message ₹0.16, and utility templates are free inside the 24-hour customer service window while marketing templates are not.
- What are the most common reasons templates get rejected?
- A variable at the very start or end of the message, variables that skip numbers, too many variables for the amount of text, link shorteners, promotional content in a utility or authentication template, and bodies over 1,024 characters.
- Is this the same as Meta's own classification?
- No. It is an estimate from Meta's published rules, so a borderline template can still be classified differently. Nexora shows Meta's real decision for every template you submit from the app.
